More than protection

Thursday, 22 March 2012 | Posted by: Natallia Abraztsova, European Coatings Journal

I’m still very fascinated about the topic of functional coatings. Today it is normal, that coatings are anti-ice, anti-scratch, self-healing, water-repellent, - in other words they are multifunctional. But what does "multifunctional” actually mean?

For me a coating is multifunctional, when it can do more than only protect a substrate. Another question is, whether these additional functionalities can work in a single coating, and where there are technological limits in using them in practice.
Recently I’ve talked to R&D experts from the coatings industry. Some of them don’t see any technological limits in using multifunctional coatings. Others see a permanent competition between conventional coatings and the ones with additional functionalities. According to the experts, a big issue is applying innovative products with existing equipment.
What do you think about it? What does "multifunctional” mean to you? Where do you see technological limits in applying such coatings in practice? I would be happy to share views with you.
