Less raw materials, higher prices and no end in sight

Thursday, 14 October 2010 | Posted by: Damir Gagro, European Coatings Journal

Delivery difficulties for and disproportional price increases of many raw materials are challenging the coatings industry. According to national and international associations prices for certain raw materials have increased drastically – in the worst case by up to 50 %.

Absorbing the massive increase in costs is getting very difficult for coatings producers, despite all efforts of dampening production costs. Additionally, a supply shortage for various raw materials necessary to formulate paints and coatings stresses the industry. With reductions in stock and production capacities as well as the increasing demand for raw materials in emerging markets the situation remains tight. Consequently this shortage leads to longer, and in some cases very long, delivery times and there is no end in sight, or maybe it is? What is your opinion about this topic? What actions can be taken by coatings producers to secure a solid position in this situation? Discuss with your peers.
