Key driver(s) in automotive coatings

A non-representative survey among members of our LinkedIn group "European Coatings Industry” showed what coatings professionals consider the key driver in automotive coatings development.

Would you have guessed that 33 % of respondents opted for "improving performance/ aesthetics” and 27% for "multifunctional coatings”? While I had expected more votes for "environmental compliance”, only a share of 16 % chose this option. 11 % ticked "weight/ cost reduction”, another 11 % went for "increasing productivity”.

Admittedly, the restriction to only one possible answer is tricky, as environmental compliance can be supported, for example, by weight reduction; and multifunctional coatings can help to improve performance. Obviously these options are mutually dependent.

Nevertheless, tighter government regulation, cost and energy saving pressure are mentioned in almost any report on automotive coatings trends. The current legislative environment has caused development to lean more and more toward waterborne, environmentally sound solutions. Meanwhile, advances continue to be made in nanotechnology, UV technology and other processes.
