High recognition for drag reducing paints

With an impressive number of 140 participants, the Coatings Science International (CoSi) conference 2010 took place in Noordwijk last week. The beautiful Dutch North Sea resort was again the venue for this gathering of international coatings experts. 32 lectures were given on latest research findings in the field of coatings.

Always exciting at the end of the conference: the presentation of the awards for Science, Innovation and Creativity. What especially caught my attention was the innovation award for the most interesting new development presented at the conference. This time it went to a paper on "drag reducing paints for the reduction of fuel consumption in aviation and shipping".

The background: in October 2009 the European Commission decided that the fuel consumption for aviation and shipping has to be reduced by 10 %, respectively 20 % until 2020. A significant contribution to this challenging goal could be a coating that reduces drag.

As the authors mentioned, it has been known for about 20 years that special microstructures can lead to a drag-reduction by up to 10 %. The paper presented a new process for the production of such microstructured coatings on large surfaces. This technique consists of a process that allows paint application, embossing and partly curing in one single step. The coating material consists of VOC-free nanocomposites that give the coating the necessary abrasion resistance and weathering stability.

In my eyes this new process seems to be a very promising solution for drag reduction and as such for fuel-saving. And I think the jury made a good choice in giving this award to such an application-related and environmentally friendly approach.
