Helping to find the right level

Thursday, 28 February 2013 | Posted by: Shuyuan Liu, Incorez

Every two years we see coatings professionals gear themselves up for the industry’s biggest trade show – and this year is no different. However, this year’s European Coatings Congress, in Nuremburg, promises to be more special than usual for me as I will present a white paper for the first time.

I will address issues surrounding epoxy based technology for coating applications, such as self-leveling flooring, and the great challenges manufacturers face in achieving VOC compliance, high performance, low odour and reduced cost at the same time.

One of the biggest challenges for waterbased epoxy hardeners in high build applications is the shrinkage of the cured product. High shrinkage would have many adverse effects on the finished self-leveling floor or tile grout, such as gaps/cracks around the edges of the applied floor and even delamination from the surface of the substrate.

My research has shown that by using a molecular engineering approach to control the architectural structure, a new generation of water soluble epoxy hardener is able to meet technological, economical and legislative requirements in concrete floor protection.

I am looking forward to presenting my findings to my peers, as well as hear about other work by my fellow professionals, and believe that the show enables innovators at the forefront of the chemical coatings industry to showcase their potential.

See you at the show!

Dr. Shuyuan Liu
