From lab to market- how fast is it?

Friday, 21 October 2011 | Posted by: Sonja Schulte, European Coatings Journal

When you are looking at different coatings conference programs you certainly will come across with some duplicates. For the presenting companies this of course makes sense, because they want to spread the information on new developments into the market. Now and again I see talks that have a quite long "conference life time" and I am asking myself if this maybe has to do with the time it takes to bring a new development from the lab to the market. If it takes some years, then you have to present pretty the same story till you have a new development. How long does it take to perform a new coatings development?

I like listen to the reports of the old hands reporting on how it was possible to develop new products in the past. Then you hear stories where bosses gave them lot of time (some five years or so) and lot of money (amounts are varying) and enough confidence to realize their ideas.

Meanwhile things have changed and  number crunchers dictate the investment and duration of projects. At the same time every company needs permanently new developments in order to hold or even to improve their market position. But I am digressing from my core topic...
It really puzzles me what the frequenzy of real new developments is. Is it possible to present every year a groundbreaking product or are two years more realistic?
And how big are the advancements?   Any suggestions?
