Does the coatings industry have an image problem?

Thursday, 3 February 2011 | Posted by: Miriam von Bardeleben, European Coatings Journal

More than a week has passed since I have listened to Hans Wijers bringing the topic up during his talk at the Coatings Summit in Washington: To what extent is the paint and coatings industry still facing an image problem? Here are the facts:...

Taking figures from his own company, AkzoNobel, Hans Wijers claimed that looking at the impact on the environment caused by the coatings manufacturer in comparision to his suppliers and the end-user of the product, it is evident that the coatings manufacturer does not really have an issue in this respect. But the CEO of the world's largest coatings manufacturer also stated that this problem can only be solved, if it is addressed by the whole coatings industry.

Thus, stuck in the middle of this topic, the paint and coatings manufacturers are facing an image problem, in spite of their efforts to make their products and processes as eco-friendly as possible. This does not only apply to the perception of the public, but also to your ability to recruit the best possible employees for your company.

So what is your opinion? In what way do you perceive an image problem? And in what way should it be addressed? Has your company found a promising way to improve its image? Tell us about it and discuss your thoughts!
