Time for research vs time to market

Thursday, 3 May 2012 | Posted by: Sonja Schulte, European Coatings Journal

Time is money is a familiar expression known all over the world. In the coatings industry also time to market is an important expression often used especially  by acount controller. These guys decide wether an expense is worth of the money or not. More and more frequently I hear complains from R&D staff in the coatings industry that they don`t have enough time to do their job seriously. Especially people working for coatings manufacturers tell me, that they are occupied with troubleshouting with costumers instead of developing new formulations with new and/or other raw materials. However, when the R&D departments of the coaitngs producers are not doing the research for new coating systems with new, better, and more sustainable properties who instead is doin the research? According to rumours within the coatings industry the raw material suppliers are doing more and more research, not only for the development of new raw materials but also for the development for new formulations for their costumers - the paint producers. That`s just about the limit! Formerly the development of the recipes was the core competency of the paint producing industry. What will be the consequences for the coatings industry. Any ideas?
