Clever and smart

Thursday, 22 July 2010 | Posted by: Kirsten Wrede, European Coatings Journal

In our editor's blog smart coatings are a frequently recurring topic. We have described exciting functional coatings, we have asked how "smart" these coatings really are, and we have been wondering how smart coatings can be defined after all. I guess it's best to say smart coatings are structured coatings which provide additional benefits by giving an appropriate response to outside conditions.

Apparently the attention for these materials - whether they support self-healing, anti-fingerprint, anti-icing or electrically heatable properties - is still on the rise. That's why I think the European Coatings Conference "Smart coatings" on 9 and 10 November, 2010 in Berlin will offer a good opportunity to get an overview of current developments for these functional coatings.

You will be amazed by the variety of possibilities for the development of smart coatings and feasible applications. I hope to meet you there!
