Can the deco DIY industry deny the trend towards low-VOC?

Thursday, 19 August 2010 | Posted by: Miriam von Bardeleben, European Coatings Journal

It is an undisputable fact that decorative paint markets are being tilted more towards growth in the decorative DIY segment, rather than the professional or construction segment. More than ever this segment seems to be driven by environmental awareness. Legislation continues to push decorative paints towards low-, if not no-VOC formulations. This prompted IRL to conduct a survey of the greening of the decorative coatings sector. Asked about their business strategy paint makers indicated that the current standing of the industry is that about 70% of decorative paint makers in Western Europe produce... decorative paints. But on the other hand, 21% of them have no, or almost no, sales of zero-VOC paints. And while are some going for 100% decorative sales being zero-VOC, others only expect a share of around 10 %. With regulations becoming more complex, do you believe that in some years manufacturers of decorative DIY coatings will still have a choice, whether they embrace the idea of a low- or no-VOC portfolio or not? Don’t miss this opportunity to discuss your point of view with your colleagues!
