Additives: Do you really want multi-functionality?

Friday, 11 September 2015 | Posted by: Sonja Schulte, European Coatings Journal

Recently I prepared a conference program dealing with the topic "additives for modern coatings”. I talked to different experts from additive producing companies. Some told me that multi-functional additives are a clear trend, others reported that their customers don´t want these kind of additives. Those customers rather want freedom and flexibility.

When I started working as an editor for European Coatings JOUNAL in 2007 I came across very soon with multifunctional additives. At that time I learned that coatings manufacturers are dreaming of an additive that would be able to tackle different challenges at once. Seemingly the interest in multifunctional coating additives is driven by the desire to simplify coating chemistry and composition in an effort to reduce total coating costs, to reduce raw materials inventory, and to improve manufacturing productivity. I often heard that using multifunctional additives can simplify the overall formulating process on coating.
However, there are also some coatings manufacturer who are not interested in multifunctional additives and I am keen to find out why. Could you give me an answer? Please leave a comment or send me an email
You want to discuss with other coatings enthusiasts on this topic? Join us at the EC Conference "Additives for modern coatings” were we will offer a technical discussion workshop with Dr. Sascha Oestreich from BASF. Here you can find the complete program.
