Powder coating: why still a niche?

Why is powder coating still a niche market? I don’t understand why we don’t hear about breakthrough technologies from this coatings segment at all. This hesitation is a mystery to me, as powder coatings obviously exhibit a lot of benefits – especially when it comes to the environment.

Europe receives (too) little attention

Entering new markets, increasing sales, maximizing profits. That’s how expansions work. Nowadays everything revolves around how to catch some ground in Asian markets or generate profits in South America. But what about Europe?

Nano – the more approaches, the more problems

The risks of exposure to nanotechnology became a public concern and consequently a political discussion. The European Commission is tackling the issue nanomaterials quite actively on top of providing a recommendation for a definition. Nanomaterials hould be handled by the chemicals over-arching regulation REACH. However, more specific requirements are necessary to handle the risk management of nanomaterials within the framework of REACH.

Hydrophopic and lipophobic – at the same time?

Sounds strange, right? But it already became reality! Normally you would expect that these features are mutually exclusive, but in fact at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) researchers are enthusiastically working on this topic.

Bio-based coatings: Hype or opportunity?

When critics read headlines like this, they must surely think: that’s just another marketing ploy! Maybe they’re right. But I believe that bio-based raw materials for the coatings industry may also be an opportunity to secure the future.

Asia-Pacific: Steps into the right direction

The Asian Paint Industry Council (APIC) has just held its 17th annual meeting, this time hosted by the Philippine member association in Manila. I had the honour of being invited to this meeting for the third time, and I came home with rather positive impressions.

Some companies are in a higher league when it comes to sustainability

For too many corporations, Life Cycle Analyses and the increasing amounts of environmental reporting that we see in Annual Reports are simply bolt-on business-as-usual activities which do not impact overall corporate thinking and culture, nor do they get to the heart of the issue. AkzoNobel and BASF are coatings companies in a higher league.

Dissolving cellulose? – mission accomplished!

German researchers are working on a problem, which I have not been aware of. What would you suggest, if you had to dissolve the ubiquitous biopolymer cellulose in order to use it for coatings? And your solution should not employ environmentally harmfull solvents or destroy the polysaccharide by using aggressive reagents. Any ideas?

Are newspapers dying? And what does it mean for printing inks?

I like newspapers. Printed ones. I like touching the paper, turning real pages, cutting out articles, reading the paper at the breakfast table, on the train, or at the beach. I have always had a printed newspaper, and I hope it will be available for a long time to come.

Stop the trend biobased!

Is it still necessary to call the development towards biobased materials any further just a trend? I don’t think so. After more than ten years a lot of new businesses and companies, which have been founded, work and deal with biobased materials. This is a proof that there already is a market – even if it is only small one.
