Cradle to Gate or Cradle to Grave: that is the question!

As Coatings progress along the road to Sustainable Development, should the industry be focusing R&D effort on innovation from Cradle to Gate or Cradle to Grave?

At the CEPE conference last week in Seville, the federation’s Sustainability Charter was approved and is now available on the public area of the CEPE web site. It is well worth reading as it not only provides a clear description of the European Coatings Industry commitment to Sustainability but it also promotes the concept of Life Cycle Thinking.

It is natural for Coatings Manufacturers to look hard at...

The Swiss Ordinance on printing inks

Whenever I do research on latest trends in printing inks, the catch word "Swiss Ordinance” jumps at me. Thinking a bit more about it, I remember the migration incident that probably caused the Swiss government to introduce this legislation aimed at controlling inks in food packaging.

The most important future coatings technologies: always the same

When I am thinking about latest trends and technologies I come across all the time with the same topics: sustainability, low VOC, high-performance, functional and so on. Every year we are performing surveys at different conferences asking the coatings experts what the most important future trends are and the answer is always pretty much the same. Is the coatings technology moving in a circle?

NanoKorea 2012: new materials and processes in nanotechnology are getting mainstream

I recently gave a talk at NanoKorea 2012 at COEX in Seoul, South Korea. The theme was on nanoparticle colloid templating and electropolymerization. It involves preparing nanopatterns on solid support substrates that have resulted in improved membranes, sensors for chiral agents, and superhydrophobic surfaces. This was on the Nanomaterials and Processing session. I spent not only a good amount of time going over the different talks in our session but also spent time going around the exhibits, which amazed me in a specific way.

Where is the center of gravity within the coatings industry moving?

"The Center of Gravity in the global coatings industry is on the move”. That will be the main theme of this year’s CEPE Annual Conference at it is indeed an interesting statement to discuss. We have seen markets that we formerly called "emerging markets” which have nowadays turned into high growth markets, e.g. in the BRIC countries. Looking back at the past months, it was not even surprising to market insiders, to see not only capacities of European coatings companies, but whole Business Units being moved from the heart of the mature European markets to China.

With capacities and demand increasing so much in markets outside Europe, the center of gravity started moving on a global level. The Center of gravity in the global coatings industry is shifting, but where to? To Asia as such, or only to China that showed an outstanding performance?

Life on Mars and the coatings industry

"Is there life on Mars?" – That’s what David Bowie already asked in his 1970s pop song. The lyrics aren’t all that clear, but to me they are somehow related to disappointment with reality, longing for a greater life somewhere out there. Now NASA’s rover "Curiosity" has landed  successfully on Mars. The mission’s overall question: is the red planet able to sustain life, or has it ever been?

Three parameters where you can see that time passes by too fast for new developments

Time is the calculation factor today

In my opinion it is the unit for modern exploitation.
Companies are asking for parameters and targets like this:

  • How many innovations did you make during a specific period of time?
  • How many new developments were established in the market in a specific period of time?
  • How  much money did you gain from cash-cow-products during a specific time period?

I think it’s a good method to  compare time periods, to interpret trends and your economic power.

Performance is everything- also while replacing fossilbased raw materials

Environmental regulations require further green solutions for coatings formulations, especially when it comes to VOC regulations and REACH. But is it always reasonable to replace fossilbased raw materials through bio-based ones?
It is obvious that renewable raw materials will become more popular, but from my point of view it would be difficult - and rather meaningless - to replace all kinds of fossil-based raw materials.
