AkzoNobel sells its North American Decorative Coatings Business to PPG. How sustainable!

I was struck over the holiday season by the news that AkzoNobel had sold its Decorative Coatings Business in North America to PPG. The news reminded me that, while change management commentators devote considerable attention these days to the environmental pillar of Sustainability, consideration must also be given to the economic pillar when developing new business strategies.

Optimizing costs and performance – which role plays production technology?

Only a few week to go until the European Coatings SHOW will its open doors again. Besides raw materials, services, lab equipment also one hall will be dedicated for showcasing new developments in production technology. The organizers report growth particularly in the production equipment segment. About 30 per cent of the exhibitors present solutions in this segment – trend still rising. In my opinion one of the most challenging tasks for the coatings industry is to optimize costs without compromising performance and quality. But which role plays production technology exactly in this context? Will we see a huge innovation step in the near future and how will it looks like?

Innovation, invention or improvement?

Recently I had a discussion about innovation. But when is a product really new and when is it just an improvement? I think we shouldn’t use the word "innovation” for every change of the product. I would rather talk about development or modification.

Assessing the “true sustainability value”

Combining performance and environmental requirements – this seems to be the ultimate task of the industry. When I asked speakers of our upcoming conference on parquet and furniture coatings, that was the prevailing opinion, as far as industry trends were concerned. You cannot look at sustainability, performance and costs separately, but you have to establish a holistic approach.

Robust, flexible, cheap – but: what is satisfactory?

Our whole economic system is based on development. And the target is always: improving everything. That’s our mantra.

A standardised global approach to Sustainability for the Coatings Industry

The Coatings Industry needs to develop a common language and a consistent set of metrics in order to build a coherent global approach to Sustainability and a level playing field. Developing a global consensus on precise definitions, standards, performance metrics and targets may be a tall order, but the benefits to both the industry and Society in general could be substantial.

Paint materials and sustainability thoughts

There is a move towards using sustainable materials based on renewable resources or biofeedstocks. I echo Tony Mash's post.
