How did you come to choose a coatings career?

Whenever I do interviews with industry professionals, I like to ask them how they came to take up a career in the coatings world. It’s funny how different the answers are. Only recently, I met an ambitious young man at a coatings company supplying the graphic arts industry.

Dissolving cellulose? – mission accomplished!

German researchers are working on a problem, which I have not been aware of. What would you suggest, if you had to dissolve the ubiquitous biopolymer cellulose in order to use it for coatings? And your solution should not employ environmentally harmfull solvents or destroy the polysaccharide by using aggressive reagents. Any ideas?

Inspired by mussels, barnacles and yummy oysters

Why are mussels, barnacles and oysters able to stick themselves at objects like rocks, to a pier or to a vessel? And - most important - what we can learn about it and how can the coatings industry make use of this knowledge?

Lignins - A "nice-to-have"!

Lignin – Yes, this is a "nice-to-have” but chemically by far too inert and too difficult to get the monomers separated! Really?

Research in green chemistry: new raw materials for coatings

If you deal with information around coatings technology, raw materials and markets every day you read at least once a week something on sustainability. To be honest, some days I am really fed up with this term. Not because I do not think that sustainability is important for the coatings industry. It´s rather because I have the impression that sometimes the term is misused for marketing reasons. Today I came across with the content of the latest issue of the journal Green Chemistry and was surprised that three articles dealt with current developments for biobased coatings. In my opinion, the use of biobased materials could be an important step to more sustainable products. Really interesting stuff!

Embed sustainability in the corporate psyche

My wish for 2014 is that all Coatings Company CEOs will integrate Sustainability into the heart of their business models to ensure that the industry as a whole will be ready to meet the changing demands in downstream markets that growing global population and finite resources will inevitably bring.

Keys to success

Cutting energy and production costs, maintaining quality when scaling up from small batches to large-scale production and producing more in a shorter period of time are challenges coatings manufacturers are faced with. What is a real key to success enabling to keep product quality and performance?

Helping to find the right level

Every two years we see coatings professionals gear themselves up for the industry’s biggest trade show – and this year is no different. However, this year’s European Coatings Congress, in Nuremburg, promises to be more special than usual for me as I will present a white paper for the first time.

Rather confusing than informative: Standardised Eco-labels for paints and coatings needed

"There can be only one” – this is tagline to the movie "Highlander”. When I take eco-labels, test seals and marks into consideration, there are more than enough. The idea behind these seals is exemplary; it should evoke the feeling and convey the message: "This product is trustworthy”.

Rays of light

When it comes to future technologies in the paints and coatings industry, one topic may not be omitted: UV curing. But what about the less established UV LED technology? Numerous studies focus on the substitution of conventional UV lamps by UV LEDs.
