Embed sustainability in the corporate psyche

My wish for 2014 is that all Coatings Company CEOs will integrate Sustainability into the heart of their business models to ensure that the industry as a whole will be ready to meet the changing demands in downstream markets that growing global population and finite resources will inevitably bring.

Creating global standards: Way to go, Singapore!

The Singapore Green Building Council has developed and implemented coating standards within the country’s Green Mark building assessment scheme in coordination with the local Paint Manufacturers’ Association. It’s a model that has been shared with Green Building Councils around the world and offers a way forward to create consistent global standards for internal and external decorative coatings.

Has the time come to address questions of sustainability objectively & consistently?

Every now and then, the blog receives pieces of news which support the view that, around the world, Sustainability is being taken very seriously. Over the last couple of months, there have been two such announcements, one political and one practical, which are highly significant and worth reviewing.

A critical link: sustainable development & technical innovation

The first is taken from a recent speech made by President Obama of the United States. Given the position of past US administrations that there is inadequate data to confirm the existence of Greenhouse Warming, the President’s initiative to demand from his administration and the US economy a focus on energy efficiency improvement and carbon pollution reduction is a significant change in policy and has much in common with the broader targets of Sustainable Development. Not surprisingly,...

Volunteer for a pilot study by the European Commission to check their new LCA methodology

I felt growing excitement when I learnt that the European Commission through its DG Environment has recognised that all industries need a standardised way of undertaking Life Cycle Analyses (LCA). It has recognised that, on the basis of current LCA methodologies, product comparisons are particularly suspect. Through its Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) project, it has developed its own LCA methodology which, it claims, is much tighter in terms of definitions than some, far less open to interpretation than many, and simple enough to be exploited by SMEs as well as larger multi-national companies. The EU does not plan to legislate in this area for many years. DG Environment has proposed an extended pilot programme starting this year and ending in 2017 across a range of industries and products. DG Environment is currently looking for volunteer industries to participate in a pilot study from now to 2017 to see if the proposed methodology makes practical sense. ...

New Chemistry copies nature: dreams become reality

Can New Chemistry copy Nature to capture carbon dioxide and successfully manufacture materials that the Coatings Industry can use? Could carbon dioxide generated from paint at the end of its life be transformed into raw materials for new coatings formulations? Once just a dream, there are signs of this becoming a reality.

New packaging solutions

Sustainability and functionality were the dominating topics at this year’s European Coatings Show and Congress. They also apply to the packaging coating segment, with an additional emphasis on product/food safety.

AkzoNobel sells its North American Decorative Coatings Business to PPG. How sustainable!

I was struck over the holiday season by the news that AkzoNobel had sold its Decorative Coatings Business in North America to PPG. The news reminded me that, while change management commentators devote considerable attention these days to the environmental pillar of Sustainability, consideration must also be given to the economic pillar when developing new business strategies.

Assessing the “true sustainability value”

Combining performance and environmental requirements – this seems to be the ultimate task of the industry. When I asked speakers of our upcoming conference on parquet and furniture coatings, that was the prevailing opinion, as far as industry trends were concerned. You cannot look at sustainability, performance and costs separately, but you have to establish a holistic approach.

A standardised global approach to Sustainability for the Coatings Industry

The Coatings Industry needs to develop a common language and a consistent set of metrics in order to build a coherent global approach to Sustainability and a level playing field. Developing a global consensus on precise definitions, standards, performance metrics and targets may be a tall order, but the benefits to both the industry and Society in general could be substantial.
