Sustainability: The goal seems to be in sight, but out of reach…

I once heard tell of a man who approached a railway employee asking the way to somewhere far away and being told that it was best not to start from here in the first place. Sometimes I sense that the coatings industry is in the same position when it comes to addressing sustainability. It knows where it wants to go but can’t see how to get there. Occasionally there is a glimpse of something new that will help identify the best route to take, and there were several such moments at the recent American Coatings SHOW in Atlanta.

Dispersing pigments without bead mills?

The dispersion of fillers and pigments in one of the most important and most energy consuming steps during paint production. When the requirements on fineness are high or the solid matter is difficult to disperse the dispersion with the dissolver is often insufficient. Thus paint producers often are forced to add another step – the milling process with a bead mill. This of course takes more labor time and more energy. A few weeks ago a producer of organic pigments for water-borne and solvent-based coatings systems presented at a conference a new kind of pigments which can be sufficiently dispersed only by using a dissolver. The speaker stated that no bead mill is longer needed. I think, if this holds true paint production will be revolutionized. But, what is the secret behind this technology?

The battle for talents

Is really a battle going on? Even though it sounds ominous, we can foresee that the situation will get more and more serious, as a shortage of brains and talents is approaching at a fast pace.

Dominating grey

I have just returned from my first visit to Scotland. There were so many nice things to see – the castles, the mountains, the "Lochs” (lakes), the historic monuments… But when it comes to colour, I can’t help but thinks of GREY – grey is the dominating façade colour, not only in the cities, but also in the small and very small villages.
