Is it time the coatings industry re-visited its approach to production?   Does this area of a manufacturing company hold the key to profitability and success?   Are we really equipped to meet the challenges of the next ten or twenty years?

How REACH has helped the coatings industry

It’s very true that Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation & restriction of CHemicals (REACH) is probably one of the most used terms for the chemical industry - and also true that it could be nominated for the award of the most negative buzzword of recent years.
However, I firmly believe that REACH polices have benefited our industry. They have meant a reduction in animal testing and a more structured system, which can only benefit us moving forward.

Carbon footprint: the decisive criterion for coatings?

Sustainable material and product concepts are fundamental for maintaining a livable environment. Global balances serving as a basis of comparison for new materials and processes have been state of the art for many years. The carbon dioxide discussion has recently put also the so-called carbon footprint – in principle an energy equivalent – into the focus of coatings materials.

Smart Coatings in Orlando and superhydrophobic coatings

I just came from the Smart Coatings 2011 in Orlando. Nice weather and location! It was well-attended with a number of lectures on the use of block copolymers templates, layer-by-layer deposition coatings, polymer brush grafting, novel methods for optical coatings, and new concepts for superhydrophobic surfaces.
