Smart colloidal particles and inorganic-organic hybrids

Latex paints contain several types of particles including polymer binder, primary pigment, extenders, and colorants. Non-traditional and nanoparticle components are of high interest. Organic–inorganic hybrids with well-defined morphology and nanostructure represent a very interesting class of materials both for their use as biomimetic composites and because of their potential use in a wide range of technologically advanced as well as more conventional application fields - coatings.

These days I hear many people complain about the winter season: "It is too cold, too windy, too uncomfortable to stay outside." I want to tell them: look at the coatings outside. If they have feelings, they for sure even feel much more dreadful.

Sustainability versus performance

Green coatings are so en vogue and they have been for quite some time now. The use of renewable raw materials could be one way to produce more sustainable coatings. These days more and more press releases reach our editorial office advertising biobased, sustainable materials. My feeling is, that this will be again a big trend at the ECS in Nuremberg in March. However, currently biobased paints only serve a small niche market. Additionally, performance requirements of the coatings are independent of the raw material source.

Sought after: coatings system with the highest development potential

During the last two decades low-emission coatings systems have showed strong growth rates due to legislative requirements and the need to reduce costs. UV-systems and powder coatings could gain further market shares. Additionally waterbased coatings have immensely contributed to reduce solvent emissions.
