Graphene: The new panacea?

I recently read an article in the journal "Nachrichten aus der Chemie” entitled "What became of the graphene hype?” A provocative title, to be sure, but there’s probably an element of truth in it. In the early 2000s, the scientific world hailed this newly discovered two-dimensional carbon modification as the new panacea. The enthusiasm has waned somewhat in many quarters since then, but hasn’t quite disappeared altogether – it keeps resurfacing in the coatings industry. Question is: can it really deliver on its promise?

Megatrend: Multifunctional coatings

In meetings with colleagues, we regularly talk about the topics we should cover in our journals and at our events   – the latest trend in the coatings industry, where developments are headed, and so on. Almost inevitably, somebody will mention multifunctional coatings. Whenever megatrends are discussed at conferences, you can be sure, too, that multifunctional coatings will be mentioned. Which begs the question: are the multifunctional systems which are already available fit for market?

Coatings technology: are biomimetics the new trend?

Hard to believe it, but it's just around the corner: the European Coatings Show is putting out calls for industry to submit abstracts. I can’t wait to see which new trends emerge. At the last show in 2015, there were quite a few submissions on isocyanate-free paint systems – one of them even landed the prestigious ECS Award. Will biometics be the new trend in 2017?

Environmentally friendly against germs and bacteria

I’m feeling surrounded by coughing, sniffng and sneezing colleagues, family members, friends and neighbours. Are you, too? It’s hard to avoid an infection, as germs and bacteria lurk everywhere - on door handles and light switches, on buses and subway trains.

Self-healing – the latest fad?

Self-healing materials are no brand new invention, they’ve been in the media for quite some time. Nevertheless, my curiosity was aroused when I found a number of news on self-healing materials on our websites recently. Coincidence or not?

Back to the future - without biocides?

At the beginning of the year, I like to tidy up my flat in order to get rid of unwanted and useless things. This time I discovered an article in a pile of newspapers and magazines. This article begins with: "Electrical-Coating – A charge alternating from positive to negative should protect ship hulls from fouling. Via this the acidity of the surrounding water is changing constantly and this repels mussels and algae”. This is what I call an exciting research project.

NIR-reflective pigments – Regulations for comparability needed

Recently I generated my first product overview regarding NIR-reflective pigments. Within my research I encountered one major difficulty. It was hardly possible for me to compile a table in which these promising functional pigments are comparable to each other.

Why development for marine coatings?

I heard about well working coatings with high corrosion resistance and perfect antifouling properties. The next generation coatings also have even less impact on the ocean and may lead to further reduction of fuel. However, there is still a huge gap.

Multifunctional coatings –a water level report

It seems to me that functional and multifunctional coatings are on everybody lips since several years. To be honest, I don`t know if this is just a pious hope of the researchers or if these kind of coatings really find their way into the market. While looking for a valid answer I found a lot of research going on and not so many products established in the market.
