Progress in eco-friendly adhesives

How far have companies come in developing environmentally friendly adhesives? I’m wondering since I’ve done an interview with a large raw material supplier for adhesives.

Sustainability is the new alibi for killing environment

Reading other people's opinion makes me rethink my liberal view on some things. This time I touch the word sustainability again.

Who can give me absolution? Please contact me!

You certainly know about the dilemma of trying to do everything right, but then to discover in the evening news that all efforts seem to be totally wasted, given all the catastrophes in this world.

Sugar based raw materials – a charming solution!

At the moment the media is discussing the historically low oil price and related costs for raw materials.
All of us are expecting the moment in which this advantageous situation will change into the contrary again.

Back to the future - without biocides?

At the beginning of the year, I like to tidy up my flat in order to get rid of unwanted and useless things. This time I discovered an article in a pile of newspapers and magazines. This article begins with: "Electrical-Coating – A charge alternating from positive to negative should protect ship hulls from fouling. Via this the acidity of the surrounding water is changing constantly and this repels mussels and algae”. This is what I call an exciting research project.

Some companies are in a higher league when it comes to sustainability

For too many corporations, Life Cycle Analyses and the increasing amounts of environmental reporting that we see in Annual Reports are simply bolt-on business-as-usual activities which do not impact overall corporate thinking and culture, nor do they get to the heart of the issue. AkzoNobel and BASF are coatings companies in a higher league.

A new angle on sustainablity: the impact of diversity

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has been making a number of statements recently about its findings concerning climate change. This learned international organisation has concluded that the concentration of carbon dioxide (CO₂) in the atmosphere has grown to levels not seen for 3 million years and that about half of cumulative anthropogenic CO₂ emissions between 1750 and 2010 have occurred in the last 40 years.
The IPCC’s theme is not new but the language used has turned from one of finding a corrective solution to one of problem mitigation.

The ACS conference in Atlanta revealed technical advances that can contribute to Sustainable Development, but hurdles remain when it comes to adoption and measurement

The American Coatings Show (ACS) was a great success in terms of organisation and enjoyed a record number of attendees. Regrettably, the exhibition element of the show rather downplayed Sustainability. Despite enthusiastic promotion of waste paint recycling, I noted that even those companies displaying ingredients with improved environmental footprints elected to promote potential functionality enhancements and said very little about upstream sustainability credentials; a significant contrast to the European exhibition in Nuremburg a year ago. However, the technical conference that accompanied the exhibition was a very different matter.

The key to Sustainability is innovation, but are Coatings companies spending enough on growth oriented R&D?

This blog says ‘No’!

First, the good news!

Plaudits to AkzoNobel for being ranked in first place in the Dow Jones Sustainability World ranking for the Superchemicals sector for 2013 as well as 2012. This is a significant achievement given the strength of interest and commitment expressed by many large multinational chemicals and coatings companies in Sustainable Development.

Congratulations also to the Decorative Coatings sector of CEPE, the Europe-wide trade association representing the interest of the Coatings Industry, for being one of the 17 successful applicants out of 90 across all sectors of European industry to be selected to join the first phase of a 3 year Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) pilot programme.

AkzoNobel and Solvay demonstrate their Sustainability credentials yet again!

It has been an exciting few months for those like myself who are committed to the promotion of Sustainable Development in the Coatings Industry. It seems as if the development of a sustainable Coatings Industry is being made at an ever-increasing pace.
