Bio-based coatings: Anything else but cheesy

Adopting renewable innovations is often a challenging task and current percentage ratios of sustainable components remain quite low. So what about a totally bio-based and fully controllable deposition process for the formation of biological coatings? How does that sound to you?

Bio-based coatings: Hype or opportunity?

When critics read headlines like this, they must surely think: that’s just another marketing ploy! Maybe they’re right. But I believe that bio-based raw materials for the coatings industry may also be an opportunity to secure the future.

Research in green chemistry: new raw materials for coatings

If you deal with information around coatings technology, raw materials and markets every day you read at least once a week something on sustainability. To be honest, some days I am really fed up with this term. Not because I do not think that sustainability is important for the coatings industry. It´s rather because I have the impression that sometimes the term is misused for marketing reasons. In my opinion, the use of biobased materials could be an important step to more sustainable products. Really interesting stuff!

World Adhesive Conference: Sustainability, availability of raw materials, and bio-based raw materials set the tone

Last week I attended the 8th World Adhesive & Sealant Conference 2012 in Paris attracting more than 900 participants from around the globe. Under the conference’s official slogan "Creating the future”, the general mood was that the adhesive industry will have to face up to the issues of sustainability and bio-based raw materials if it is to succeed in this.

Biobased polymers on the rise

Somehow it’s all about biobased polymers these days. I don’t know if it’s a coincidence, but I have lately come across several novel developments that are also highly interesting for the coatings industry. Two of them I would like to share with you.
