According to VSM (German Shipbuilding and Ocean Industries Association), advances in technology are being driven by the three E’s: emissions, efficiency and energy. Energy efficiency is a key area where marine paints need to improve.

Help – I see paint flaws everywhere!

On the way boarding an airplane, people have to queue in the gangway for a short time. The moment before you are welcomed by the crewmembers, you have a look at the door of the plane - maybe too close in some instances. I start thinking: "Isn’t this rust at the welding line?... How old might this plane be…?”

Inspired by mussels, barnacles and yummy oysters

Why are mussels, barnacles and oysters able to stick themselves at objects like rocks, to a pier or to a vessel? And - most important - what we can learn about it and how can the coatings industry make use of this knowledge?

Coatings preferences – national differences?

German punctuality, British humor, French cuisine – we all know these stereotypes. They work well, although German trains might come late, some British have already lost their humor while talking about football and also some French might have burnt their Coque au vin. But these prejudices are deeply in our heads. So my question is: Are there (individual) national coatings tastes?

Novel Coatings: same performance with fewer layers

Two articles in the May-Issue of the European Coatings JOURNAL aroused my interest, because both are dealing with groundbreaking innovations: highest levels of durability without priming on a plastic substrate and effective protection of metal structures against corrosion with only one layer of a waterborne dispersion

Difficult corrosion testing

I have just come back from an international conference on anticorrosive coatings. A lot of topics were discussed, some of which were the advancements of waterborne systems, nanotechnology, and – last but not least – corrosion testing.
