Titan dioxide: difficult times for coating manufacturers!

For quite some time now, we have informed you about a fairly unpleasant fact: costs for coating manufacturers have risen significantly during the last months. Not least because of increasing raw material prices. And now the fire in Pori, Finland, which has struck at difficult times…

New raw materials: not all seem to be interesting for paint manufacturers

About four weeks ago I blogged about a new kind of pigments which can be dispersed without using a bead mill. I received a lot of emails and comments on this blog. I never received so much feedback on any other blog before. Why is this topic so interesting for the paint manufacturers? Yes, you can save a lot of energy and time. Of course this makes your production more efficient and at the end you earn more. But, saving costs alone does not make a paint producer successful, does it? Is innovation also important for being successful? And if so, shouldn`t every new development in raw materials be as interesting as the new pigment I mentioned above?

Old effects newly explained - closer look at titanium dioxide

The localisation of electrons is a major aspect for catalytic activity of any given compound. This is why scientists from Vienna had a closer look at a particular white pigment – titanium dioxide.

NIR-reflective pigments – Regulations for comparability needed

Recently I generated my first product overview regarding NIR-reflective pigments. Within my research I encountered one major difficulty. It was hardly possible for me to compile a table in which these promising functional pigments are comparable to each other.

Coatings production: How to enhance capacity and save energy at the same time

You think it is impossible to have both at the same time? Last week I attended a workshop on modular technology for the production of coatings and adhesives. This is not only a kind of new production technology it is rather a new philosophy of paint making. The results are impressive: up to 70% energy saving, up to 100% enhancement of capacity and up to 80% reduction of payroll cost.

Can TiO2 particles save the planet?

Dispersing fine light-scattering particles into the upper atmosphere could help to combat climate change, a new geo-engineering concept promises. The technology advocates dispersing benign titanium dioxide particles as used in paint, inks and sunscreens into the stratosphere to deflect the sun’s rays.

Ways to use TiO2 more efficiently

We are reading a lot about tight supplies and increasing prices of titanium dioxide these days. As TiO2 is the most important white pigment in the coatings industry, known for its ability to improve opacity and whiteness, paint manufacturers need new technologies to use TiO2 more efficiently or replace it with equivalent materials.
