Opportunities and challenges in 2017

One of the most frequently asked questions at the start of a new year has to be: "What resolutions have you made for the new year?” The answers often revolve around sport, diet or less stress.European Coatings Journal asked 20 European coatings manufacturers where they see the greatest opportunities or challenges in 2017. As the previous years, 2017 is once again labeled as a year of uncertainity. Raw material prices and changes to legislation are an issue for many in 2017, but other factors may also pose a challenge to coating and paint manufacturers.

ECS 2015 - an event full of superlatives

The European Coatings SHOW broke the thousand mark: this week the 1,000th exhibitor has registered for the European Coatings SHOW. The highest number ever. So international and so diverse as never before. A wonderful feeling! To me, this means I have to run more at the ECS to meet industry experts and see what the coming two years have in store when it comes to coatings developments. As one thing is for sure, the ECS sets the pace.

Helping to find the right level

Every two years we see coatings professionals gear themselves up for the industry’s biggest trade show – and this year is no different. However, this year’s European Coatings Congress, in Nuremburg, promises to be more special than usual for me as I will present a white paper for the first time.

Rather confusing than informative: Standardised Eco-labels for paints and coatings needed

"There can be only one” – this is tagline to the movie "Highlander”. When I take eco-labels, test seals and marks into consideration, there are more than enough. The idea behind these seals is exemplary; it should evoke the feeling and convey the message: "This product is trustworthy”.

Rays of light

When it comes to future technologies in the paints and coatings industry, one topic may not be omitted: UV curing. But what about the less established UV LED technology? Numerous studies focus on the substitution of conventional UV lamps by UV LEDs.

AkzoNobel sells its North American Decorative Coatings Business to PPG. How sustainable!

I was struck over the holiday season by the news that AkzoNobel had sold its Decorative Coatings Business in North America to PPG. The news reminded me that, while change management commentators devote considerable attention these days to the environmental pillar of Sustainability, consideration must also be given to the economic pillar when developing new business strategies.

Optimizing costs and performance – which role plays production technology?

Only a few week to go until the European Coatings SHOW will its open doors again. Besides raw materials, services, lab equipment also one hall will be dedicated for showcasing new developments in production technology. The organizers report growth particularly in the production equipment segment. About 30 per cent of the exhibitors present solutions in this segment – trend still rising. In my opinion one of the most challenging tasks for the coatings industry is to optimize costs without compromising performance and quality. But which role plays production technology exactly in this context? Will we see a huge innovation step in the near future and how will it looks like?
