The future is green – for the coatings industry too!

Germany in summer 2017. The nation of carmakers is shocked. A court in the south of the country has ruled in favour of a diesel driving ban. From 2018 many diesel cars will be banned from the roads of Stuttgart. Other German cities are sure to follow and other European cities have already imposed bans in the city centres. I believe this will also provide a boost for electromobility and the reawakened environmental consciousness of politics will undoubtedly extend to other fields. Which will in turn increase consumer awareness and lead to more environmentally friendly and sustainable products. Sooner or later, this is going to hit the coatings industry. Is our sector prepared?

A cobbler should stick to his last! But why?

Providing support for customers to enable them to get the best results from their work is a matter of course for any successful modern company. However, it has recently come to my attention that services are being offered in the coatings and allied industries that have nothing to do with an actual product and its application. For example, one German company has recently started offering its customers support for banking communications and commercial business organisation. That was never a part of the company's core business! But might it be successful?

The coatings industry needs more women!

"Not again!” is probably what some of you are thinking. The proportion of women in the coatings industry is low and I’m wondering whether it should stay that way or whether the paint industry wouldn’t be better off actively doing something about it. You see, according to Credit Suisse's most recent study, the more women who are involved in decision-making, the better a company performs. On top of this, there is the ever-threatening shortage of skilled workers. Yes, while there may be a desire within the industry to hire more women and to place them in senior positions, unfortunately the reality is somewhat different. However, that can be changed.

The future of plastering

Recently I’ve come across an article that focused on the future of plastering. It is said that innovative new construction design has been realised primariliy with glass, brick or steel lately, while the traditional and proven material plastering lags behind and is basically used in existing buildings.

The laboratory of the future - how should it look like?

I recently read an article by an experienced coatings expert in which he described his vision for the lab of the future. This seems to be an issue that is attracting the close attentions of the international coatings industry. Science fiction? More likely fictional (coatings) science (labs).

Additives: Do you really want multi-functionality?

Recently I prepared a conference program dealing with the topic "additives for modern coatings”. I talked to different experts from additive producing companies. Some told me that multi-functional additives are a clear trend, others reported that their customers don´t want these kind of additives. Those customers rather want freedom and flexibility.

Bio-based coatings: Anything else but cheesy

Adopting renewable innovations is often a challenging task and current percentage ratios of sustainable components remain quite low. So what about a totally bio-based and fully controllable deposition process for the formation of biological coatings? How does that sound to you?

Adaptation versus risk, what is the better idea for the future?

Always higher, faster, further? What demands do customers have? What requirements do companies identify for themselves?
