The future is green – for the coatings industry too!

Germany in summer 2017. The nation of carmakers is shocked. A court in the south of the country has ruled in favour of a diesel driving ban. From 2018 many diesel cars will be banned from the roads of Stuttgart. Other German cities are sure to follow and other European cities have already imposed bans in the city centres. I believe this will also provide a boost for electromobility and the reawakened environmental consciousness of politics will undoubtedly extend to other fields. Which will in turn increase consumer awareness and lead to more environmentally friendly and sustainable products. Sooner or later, this is going to hit the coatings industry. Is our sector prepared?

What the current crisis at VW means for the coatings industry

VW rigged the exhaust emissions. It’s all over the media. The company’s shares are in freefall, the chairman had to resign and there are reports of possible lawsuits in the billions. But what does all this fuss mean for the coatings industry? I don’t believe it will suffer all that much.

Stylish again: blue cars

I had to smile a little when I read the latest news on automotive colour trends from BASF: "blue colours are gaining ground” was one of the key messages. My car – a VW Golf IV – was built in 2002 and is (you may already guess) blue. A very nice blue.

Help – I see paint flaws everywhere!

On the way boarding an airplane, people have to queue in the gangway for a short time. The moment before you are welcomed by the crewmembers, you have a look at the door of the plane - maybe too close in some instances. I start thinking: "Isn’t this rust at the welding line?... How old might this plane be…?”

Isocyante-free 2K coatings systems:decoupling of pot-life and cure speed

We all know the advantages and disatvantages of  isocyante based coatings systems. Exposure to free isocyante can result in adverse health effects such as respiratory diseases and severe allergic sensitization. Further isocyantes undergo irreversible side reactions with water which can be problematic for the application of isocyated based coatings such as PUR coatings in humid environments. There is also a need in many application for faster drying and hardness development that can achieved with current isocyante chemistry. However, typical approaches to faster dry times using isocyante chemistry usually lead to shorter formulation pot-life. Now two different isocyante-free approaches will be presented at the European Coatings CONGRESS. Both offer decoupling of pot life and curing speed while offering performance comparable to established systems. In my opinion, this is a real breakthrough in coatings technology!

Coatings preferences – national differences?

German punctuality, British humor, French cuisine – we all know these stereotypes. They work well, although German trains might come late, some British have already lost their humor while talking about football and also some French might have burnt their Coque au vin. But these prejudices are deeply in our heads. So my question is: Are there (individual) national coatings tastes?

NIR-reflective pigments – Regulations for comparability needed

Recently I generated my first product overview regarding NIR-reflective pigments. Within my research I encountered one major difficulty. It was hardly possible for me to compile a table in which these promising functional pigments are comparable to each other.

Good looks are not everything

As a newcomer to the world of paints and coatings, I find myself asking what requirements automotive coatings must meet nowadays. The very first one, of course, is aesthetics – they should make the car look beautiful and desirable. But aesthetics alone do not make a good car paint.
