Progress in eco-friendly adhesives

How far have companies come in developing environmentally friendly adhesives? I’m wondering since I’ve done an interview with a large raw material supplier for adhesives.

Hats off to young scientists

I would like to join my colleague Vanessa Bauersachs who showed her delight about some positive news that stick out of all those recent shocking reports (see her blog post of 26 May). I have also come across something delightful: three junior researchers from Germany have received a renowned award for the development of a biodegradable gelatine-based adhesive.

Nature – once more showing off

I have to admit, I am a little jealous of nature´s way to invent new things. How nature is dealing with complex molecules to solve problems in a playfully way. I really like the concept to have an eye for small and hard to discover details in nature in order to find solutions for our lives. Let´s try this concept of creating ideas with the example of a carnivorous plant.

Dissolving cellulose? – mission accomplished!

German researchers are working on a problem, which I have not been aware of. What would you suggest, if you had to dissolve the ubiquitous biopolymer cellulose in order to use it for coatings? And your solution should not employ environmentally harmfull solvents or destroy the polysaccharide by using aggressive reagents. Any ideas?

Inspired by mussels, barnacles and yummy oysters

Why are mussels, barnacles and oysters able to stick themselves at objects like rocks, to a pier or to a vessel? And - most important - what we can learn about it and how can the coatings industry make use of this knowledge?

Adhesives: Emulating Nature

Recently, I read an interesting study about the ladybird. This tiny creature has no problem walking up and down walls. Just like other insects.

But how does it manage this?

Functional coatings: the only hot topic in coatings technology?

Knowledge about the latest trends is crucial to be successful on the market. However, definition of the hottest topics for the European coatings industry is not trivial. Some trends are global, but each country faces its own challenges. For some years functional and multifunctional coatings are on everybody´s lips. Waterborne systems still are very interesting. And what is about renewable raw materials for coatings? The editorial team of the European Coatings JOURNAL defined recently the topics they want to present next year in their conference program.

Green adhesives

Two weeks ago I attended the FEICA European Adhesives & Sealants Conference in Helsinki, Finland. The program was mainly focused on market topics. The good news is that markets for adhesives are growing globally next year. However, I was specially interested in technical trends in adhesive formulation. Apparently, many people are working on bio-based and degradable systems. Experts I talked to expect these products to be available on the market in 1 to 2 years. However, some interessting research results are already available.
