Dispersing pigments without bead mills?

The dispersion of fillers and pigments in one of the most important and most energy consuming steps during paint production. When the requirements on fineness are high or the solid matter is difficult to disperse the dispersion with the dissolver is often insufficient. Thus paint producers often are forced to add another step – the milling process with a bead mill. This of course takes more labor time and more energy. A few weeks ago a producer of organic pigments for water-borne and solvent-based coatings systems presented at a conference a new kind of pigments which can be sufficiently dispersed only by using a dissolver. The speaker stated that no bead mill is longer needed. I think, if this holds true paint production will be revolutionized. But, what is the secret behind this technology?
