The Dow Chemical company has recently formed Dow Coating Materials. The new business unit focuses on the coatings market and combines the resources and technologies of both companies, Dow and Rohm and Haas, to globally supply raw materials for architectural and industrial coatings. ECJ spoke to the new Vice President of Dow Coating Materials, Luis Fernandez, about the new business unit and future plans. Dow Coating Materials combines the resources of Dow Coatings Solutions and Rohm and Haas Coating Materials. To what extent will the new business unit differ from the previous units? Is there any restructuring planned? Luis Fernandez: We are well into the restructuring and have already established a stable organization that can meet and exceed our customers’ needs. The new business unit combines the global strength of The Dow Chemical Company with the regional and market application expertise of Rohm & Haas. Combining two of the leading suppliers in the industry allows us to provide a new level of service to coatings formulators that include access to more chemicals, innovation, support services and the other resources the industry needs to grow and develop new solutions. The business unit "is also employing an aggressive growth strategy." What are Dow’s growth plans? Does the company concentrate on organic or inorganic growth? Luis Fernandez: Our growth plans will be based around the needs of our customers and the industries. Short-term, there are plenty of opportunities for organic growth that resulted from bringing the two companies together that require resources and focus. However, we continually evaluate all possible growth options. The new business unit "is implementing new processes that reduce the energy consumption and waste products produced at its coating product production facilities worldwide." How do these processes look like? Luis Fernandez: Reducing energy consumption and waste is an ongoing task at Dow. As a result, our proactive efforts to better use what we have and better plan for the future has a tremendous impact. Since 1994, when Dow first reported its energy and conservation performance, the company has saved 1,600 trillion BTU of energy. This savings is equivalent to the energy needed to generate the electricity used in all residential houses in California for one year. Our efforts have also resulted in energy savings of USD 8.6 billion and have prevented 86 million metric tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere. Dow Coating Materials is at the forefront of sustainability efforts, collaborating with paint formulators to develop low-VOC and other "green" coatings, including raw materials based on naturally occurring seed oil alcohols, technologies using renewable resources and latexes that comply with SCAQMD regulations.
