Evonik Industries is expanding its specialty silica capacities in Ako, Japan at DSL JapanCo Ltd., where the concern holds 51 % of the shares. The extension is scheduled to start operation in 2015 and only constitutes a part of the entire expansion of speciality silica capacities worldwide. The concern projects that the global capacities will have grown by approximately 30 % by the end of 2014 compared to 2010. After expansions in Asia and Europe, a plant expansion for precipitated silica will start operation in Chester, US, until the end of the year. Furthermore, the construction of a silica plant in Brazil, which is due to start up in 2016, has been approved recently. Overall, the company’s global annual production capacity for precipitated and fumed silica as well as matting agents reaches 550,000 metric tons. Apart from coatings, silica are used for products such as batteries, silicones, and engineered rubber items.
