The coatings industry reports highest recycling levels

Tuesday, 13 January 2015

Figures just released from the British Coatings Federation (BCF) show record recycling levels for the coatings industry, with nearly four times as much waste being recycled compared to 17 years ago, when BCF records began.

Waste going to landfill has continued to fall, with just 2.8kg per tonne of production, against 1996’s figure of nearly 50kg.

BCF’s Tom Bowtell said "The industry is working continuously to both reduce overall waste, and improve the way that it is managed. I’m proud of the industry’s record breaking levels of recycling, which shows our commitment to the environment.”

National project manages waste paint downstream

Data is gathered through BCF’s Coatings Care Programme, where nearly 40 member sites report on a variety of health, safety and environmental Key Performance Indicators. Improvements are rewarded with the presentation of the annual BCF Coatings Care Progress and Coatings Care Overall Best Performer Awards.

While this great recycling work is happening in the factories, the BCF has also started a national project to try and manage waste paint downstream, which was highlighted in a report launched at the House of Commons at the end of last year.
