Akzo Nobel breaks ground on a new facility located in Qionglai Yang’an Industrial Park in Chengdu, the capital city of the Sichuan Province. The addition is the coatings manufacturer’s fourth plant for decorative paints and part of an investment plan in excess of EUR 50 million to build plants for both powder coatings and decorative paints. The first phase of the new facility is due to open in 2016, with full operations expected by 2017. The CEO Ton Büchner describes China as one of the company’s "most strategically important markets” and states that the new facility will help to expand the "manufacturing footprint in Asia".

In addition to building the new plant, the company is also donating to help fund the creation of ten educational centres in Qionglai as a part of its Human Cities initiative.
