Jack Baarend, Consultant to the printing industry lectures the Pre-congress tutorial "chemistry of offset printing inks" at the European Coatings Congress next Monday in Nuremberg, Germany. This tutorial covers the raw materials used in inks and the way they affect ink properties. "The raw materials used in inks define the properties of the ink. Thus we must choose the correct raw materials for the type of ink we want to produce", explains Jack Baarends. In his lecture hard resins, vegetable oils, mineral oils and additives, which are combined to generate varnishes, will be addressed. The varnish used defines many properties such as gloss, setting speed and lithographic performance. It is the most important material used in any ink.
