Measuring DFT on textured finish

What is best practice for measuring the dry film thickness of a textured coating (on galvanised steel)?

By micrometer, the maximum DFT (ie, the peak height) is about 40um, and by gravimetric methods, the DFT is calculated to be about 30um. Using a boring device (DJH) does not give a clear film build because of the undulating nature of the surface.

Gravimetric seems to give the most repeatable results, but is not practical for quality assurance on the production line.
