Intentional cracks in surface coating?

Is there any way to formulate a surface coating so that it forms crystals or cracks?
It's meant to be a cosmetic effect imitating ice on the surface of miniatures. There is one product which causes the paint to crack into a "geographic" surface. Similar to dry mud in the desert. But since I would like to create the appearance of ice crystals on the surface of an object, that doesn't really help.

I am trying to find information on the subject, but since no one I've asked has had any idea where to look I haven't found anything yet.

Any ideas on where I should look, what it's called, or anything else that could help me get on the right track?
