Architectural coatings

| 12. Sep 2018 |

Decorative and protecting

My home is my castle – but with several differences. Apart from the fact that modern standard houses tend to be less frequently haunted than castles, most of them are usually fitted out with additional insulating materials. And then they are given a lick of paint on the outside. As a new-era lord of the manor, you also know that aesthetics matter. Both indoors and outdoors. However, architectural coatings clearly have a lot more to offer. In addition to the protection that outdoor paints provide against UV radiation and inclement weather, modern customers appreciate not having to put up with the smell of paint indoors. In a similar vein, you can approach this seminar from two sides as well: as a customer who knows what it means to paint a wall and as a colleague of paint chemists. Either way, you will be satisfied with the next coat of paint you apply. By then, you will know how architectural coatings are formulated, which chemistries underlie them and which chemistries you can use to influence them. You will learn just how different the requirements imposed on indoor and outdoor coatings are. You will also discover the requirements imposed on paints by the materials of modern-day "castles” – wood and steel – and the ways in which the requirements on indoor and outdoor paints differ. This seminar will make you the king of your castle, by providing insights into the current debate on waterborne versus solventborne technologies.

Your key-learnings:

  • Which binder systems should be used for which application?
  • What are the most important paint components and how to formulate a paint?
  • How can we selectively modify paint properties?
  • How do I achieve high hiding power and a good surface?
  • Which aspects need to be considered in the formulation of interior paints?
  • What are the key drivers for exterior facade paints?
  • What distinguishes waterborne from solventborne floor coatings?
  • Different substrates with different requirements?
