Fundamentals of Rheology for Coatings
|
Presenter: Thomas G. Mezger, Anton Paar Germany
Date: October 20 + 21, 2009, 4pm - 5:30pm Berlin (10am - 11:30am New York)
Fee: 400,00 EUR
This course covers the basics of rheology and rheometry using rotational and oscillatory rheometers to characterize flow and viscoelastic behavior of coatings.
Part 1: Viscosity and flow behavior by rotational tests
- Basics: Measuring systems like concentric cylinders, cone-and-plate, parallel-plates, and relative systems like disks and Krebs spindles; definition of shear stress, shear rate, (shear) viscosity, viscosity law of Newton;
- Flow behavior: flow and viscosity curves with application examples showing ideally viscous (Newtonian) flow, shear-thinning (pseudoplastic) and shear-thickening (dilatant) flow behavior; different test conditions and analysis methods for yield points;
- Leveling and sagging after application: time-depending structure break and viscosity recovery ("thixotropic behavior")
Part 2: Viscoelastic behavior by oscillatory tests
- Basics: definition of (shear) strain or deformation, shear modulus, elasticity law of Hooke; ideally elastic deformation behavior; introduction to oscillatory tests, definition of storage and loss modulus, loss or damping factor; presentation of oscillatory tests with application examples;
- Viscoelastic character, and storage stability of dispersions: Amplitude Sweeps, linear viscoelastic (LVE) range, yield point and flow point; Frequency Sweeps, and the crossover point of unlinked polymers;
- Leveling and sagging after application: time-depending structure break and recovery in terms of viscoelastic behavior ("thixotropy");
- Curing of UV- and powder coatings: time-, temperature-, light intensity-depending melting and curing, glass transition, sol / gel transition;
- Testing solids in form of films, laminates and bars: time- or temperature-depending viscoelastic behavior (DMTA)
The Presenter
Thomas G. Mezger studied in Chemical Engineering at the University of Stuttgart, Germany. Since 1984 he has gained a wealth of experience in the field of practical rheology during his years with the rheometer manufacturers Contraves, Physica and Anton Paar Germany. He is author of "The Rheology Handbook, for users of rotational and oscillatory rheometers", Hannover, 2006.
