Coatings - Raw materials & formulation
|
Module Binders
- The heart of every coating system
Presenters: Dr. Bettina Gerharz-Kalte, Elotex AG
Dr. Oliver Seewald, Universität Paderborn
Every formulator knows that you can't have a coating system without a binder. Module 1 presents all you need to know about binders: the typical reactions undergone by binders and coatings along with an introduction to the application properties of different types of binder. On completing this module, you will be able to use binders to tailor coatings to your needs.
Topics covered:
- How coatings materials are structured
- The roles of binders/film formers
- What is meant by monomer, polymer, oligomer etc.
- The behaviour of aqueous polymer dispersions and their application areas
- The binder as the basis of the coating system: Typical binder and coating reactions
- The applications properties of the various types of binder
Date:
15 - 18 September 2008
Time: 16.00 - 17.30 h CET
Course fee: 490,00 EUR
The Presenters
Dr. Bettina Gerharz-Kalte is Global Market Segment Manager in the Waterproofing and Concrete Repair division of National Starch & Chemical GmbH in Frankfurt/Main, a subsidiary of Elotex AG. Prior to that, she was a dispersions researcher at Hoechst, before becoming head of Dispersible Powders R&D at Clariant where she was later appointed global Marketing Manager for Adhesives. She was subsequently appointed head of the Emulsion Powder division at Celanese Emulsions GmbH.
Dr. Oliver Seewald gained his doctorate in inorganic chemistry at the University of Paderborn in 2001. He then worked there as a scientific officer in the "Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry" working group. In 2006, he transferred to the department "Chemistry and Technology of Coating Materials", under Professor Bremser.
