Coatings - Raw materials & formulation
|
Module Additives
- The trouble-shooters
Presenters: Michael Dreyer, Wacker Chemie AG
Dr. Wilfried Scholz, BYK Chemie GmbH
Dr. Christian Schaller, Ciba, Basel
Additives are coming to the fore as the demands on quality rise and environmental legislation is tightened up. Additives avoid defects and impart specific properties to coating systems. They are also critical to the marketability of a coating material. This module deals with wetting and dispersing additives along with rheological and surface additives. UV absorbers will be presented, too. On completion, you will be able to control the properties of your coating systems through the judicious choice of additives.
Topics covered:
- Effects achievable with additives
- Which surface additives exist and where they are used
- How to control the rheology of a coating system with additives
- The chemistry behind antifoams
- The applications properties of the various types of binder
- How act UV absorber and radical scavenger
- Which light stabilizers are used for aqueous applications
Date:
13 - 16 October 2008
Time: 16.00 - 17.30 h CET
Course fee: 490,00 EUR
The Presenters
Michael Dreyer
began his career at Geholit and Wiemer GmbH, where he worked on the applications technology and development of heavy-duty anti-corrosive coating materials and industrial coatings. After studying industrial chemistry at the University of Applied Science in Niederrhein, he continued his development work in his capacity as deputy laboratory manager. He joined Wacker Chemie AG in 1996, where he runs the Technical Marketing Pyrogenic Silica Laboratory for the Coatings, Inks and Composites markets.
Dr. Wilfried Scholz
works as technical marketing manager for BYK-Chemie GmbH in Wesel, where he is responsible for advanced training in the Coatings Additives Applied Technology department. He gained his doctorate in chemistry at the Technical University of Braunschweig in 1978. He then worked in various fields of coatings development and applications technology, including masonry paints, synthetic varnishes and automotive OEM coatings. He has been with Byk-Chemie GmbH since 1986.
Dr. Christian Schaller received his Diploma degree in chemistry from the University of Stuttgart, Germany, in 1998. After obtaining his PhD at the Research Institute of Pigments and Coatings (FPL) , Stuttgart, Germany in 2001, he continued academic research at the FPL. He joined Ciba Specialty Chemicals in 2002. In 2003 he took over the responsibility as Application Head for Coating Protection and Wood Coatings with global responsibility for light stabilizers and additives for automotive, industrial, architectural and wood industries.
