Adhesion promotors, APE-free surfactants, hydrophilic polyisocyanates

Rhodia HPCII has enlarged its range of performance monomers and polymers for the resins and coatings industries: In the field of adhesion promoters, the "Sipomer" specialty monomers range now includes "PAM 100", a methacrylic phosphate monomer that improves adhesion to metals, concrete, glass and other inorganic substrates and that can be used in both water- and solvent- based formulations; "PAM 200", a highly versatile methacrylic phosphate monomer to improve metal adhesion that also significantly improves corrosion resistance, which can be incorporated in water, solvent or 100% solid based polymers systems, and "PAM 300", a versatile acrylic phosphate functional monomer that improves adhesion to various different metal substrates. The acrylic reactive group provides higher reaction rate in UV and EB curable applications. Also, new APE free surfactants for decorative coatings applications have been developed: "Rhodapex LA 300 SB", a highly ethoxylated anionic emulsifier designed to improve latex chemical stability, provides very low pour point and dioxane level (<100 ppm). "Rhodasurf 3065", a non ionic emulsifier designed for the emulsion polymerization of acrylic and styrene acrylic systems, is especially effective in replacing APEs ethoxylated with 20 to 30 moles at the same usage level. Rhodia PPMC will be launching a new hydrophilic, self-emulsifiable polyisocyanate, "Rhodocoat X EZ-D 401", for fast drying waterborne coatings in demanding applications. Especially designed for two-component (2K) waterborne systems where fast development of properties is required, the new product is easily hand-miscible in the polyol part and combines both high reactivity and good drying properties with a long pot-life. It also has a good weathering resistance and is recommended for highly durable outdoor, as well as indoor applications, e.g. in railway equipments, car repair or general industrial. In wood coating applications, more specifically, it will improve stackability and also chemical and solvent resistance, recommending it for furniture or parquet applications. The product is also of interest in Transportation coatings to speed up the drying time and thus reducing dust issues and improving film appearance. Expanding the "Rhodocoat" range, Rhodia PPMC has also introduced two further self-emulsifying polyisocyanates, "Rhodocoat X EZ-M 501" and "Rhodocoat X EZ-M 502", which are APEO-free and will give excellent coatings durability. They are especially designed to formulate high performance waterborne coatings, with very low VOC content. They are recommended for wood coatings, soft-feel formulations for plastics and coatings for car refinish and other transportations.

New colours, photoinitiators, antimicrobials, UV absorbers

In the automotive, industrial and decorative coatings sector, Ciba Specialty Chemicals is showing new colours, featuring especially a new range of effect pigments, as well as photoinitiators, antimicrobials and UV absorbers. The latest developments include brighter colours with higher strength, more effective protection of coatings, and products to support the growth of waterborne and VOC-free coatings. New products for imaging and inks have been designed for use in UV curing systems and varnishes, aqueous inks and varnishes, liquid packaging and specialty inks, digital printing, and imaging and publication inks. Further to that, "Ciba Prime IT" will be highlighted as a new technology for facilitating printing and adhesion on plastic substrates.

Reliable determination of UV-curing coatings

At the ECS 2005, Reologica Instruments, in cooperation with Hamamatsu, will be presenting a revamped rheometer for characterising the crosslinking properties of polymer materials under defined UV light. The UV cell needed for the rheological tests has a lower panel of quartz that can be heated and cooled by a current of air over the range extending from room temperature to 200 °C. The air current is uncoupled from the sample surface, so as to avoid interference. The upper panel can also be supplied in quartz on request. The UV light is passed through a flexible wave guide. The light source is controlled by the software in the rheometer. As crosslinking processes usually proceed very quickly under UV light, the data need to be recorded at a high frequency. "Fast-Oscillation Software" makes it possible to measure readings at high frequency. This ensures that the data can be reliably evaluated.
