Energy curing chemistries have been employed successfully in the wood furniture industry for over 30 years. Using 100 % solids on roll coat flat wood substrates has helped manufacturers improve productivity while meeting stringent regulations for chemicals and VOCs. The introduction of waterbased energy curable resins further changed the landscape by combining the low viscosity of solvent- and waterbased systems with the high performances of 100 % UV thus enabling greater penetration into contoured substrates requiring spray applied coatings such as cabinet doors.
At the European Coatings Conference "Furniture Coatings" on 2 and 3 March, 2010, in Berlin, Colette Moulaert will present recent advances made in developing tailor-made waterbased UV chemistries that show increased versatility and performance in areas such as warm wetting of wood substrates, high gloss, curing of highly pigmented systems, and outdoor resistance.
