"Easy-to-Clean / Self-Cleaning Coatings II"
December, 8th - 9th 2009

Coatings that help remove dirt or contaminations from surfaces, or even prevent their formation in the first place - such systems have been around for a long time, if you think of self-cleaning ovens or non-stick frying pans. However, with the advent of nanotechnology in recent years, this topic has received an enormous fresh impetus, entering many other coating realms. Meanwhile, easy-to-clean or, one step further, self-cleaning coatings applications are being put forward for architectural paints, for sanitary surfaces, for industrial coatings or for marine (antifouling) paints. Such systems mostly rely on the formation of nanostructures at the coatings' surface, for instance via incorporation of nanoparticles or via sol-gel formation of hybrid nanostructures. Ultrahdrophobicity, ultrahydrophilicity and photocatalytic effects are some currently hotly debated keywords. More often than not, the coatings are mimicking biological models, such as the Lotus leaf surface, dolphin skin, or mechanisms by which sea organisms prevent fouling.
While the proof-of-principle has been demonstrated for many easy-to-clean or self-cleaning coatings, the current debate centers around their applicability, their effectivity in practice and their durability. Open questions also concern reliable yet easy-to-apply testing methods as well as standardisation issues.

Thus, for the first time within the ECC series, the European Coatings Conference "Easy-to-Clean / Self Cleaning Coatings" will focus on these topics, aiming to discuss on a high technical level the current state-of-the-art of such coatings in various practical applications and presenting new material developments and new concepts in this field. The conference addresses R&D managers from coatings formulators, coatings raw material suppliers, production and application equipment producers as well as OEM manufacturers/coatings endusers worldwide. Speakers at the event will be invited international experts from these industries as well as from leading academic research institutes.

Past date:
Easy-to-Clean / Self-Cleaning Coatings, November, 29th - 30th 2007
