Basics of furniture coatings |
Coatings for furniture do not only improve the optical aspect of the devices, they even make them more durable. The market for furniture coatings, which had a size of approx. 1.9 million tons in 2006, will be discussed in detail. Within the furniture segment wood is the most important material for the furniture industry and therefore builds the focus of the tutorial. The different types of wood typically used and their characteristics, especially in terms of coatability, are being looked at. Since furniture has to fulfill different requirements in various areas, e.g. the kitchen and living room segments, a significant part of the presentation emphasizes on the requirements that furniture surfaces, like veneer, foils and coatings have to fulfil. Especially in case of coatings different types of waterborne and solventborne coatings are introduced and discussed. Finally the complete coating process is illustrated - from sanding over application to curing of the coatings.
