Bio-adhesion to medical devices
Require an update on the effects that govern the interaction of medical devices with biological matter?
Our concise pre-conference tutorial will try to make you familiar with the fundamentals of these interactions, addressing the chemical and physical effects that are at work, when "the race for the surface" between microorganisms and body cells to adhere to such artificial surfaces sets in. The tutorial thus aims at enabling you to follow and to judge the high-level expert presentations of the main conference more easily.
The exclusive three-hour tutorial is limited to a maximum of 30 participants to guarantee an intense exchange of information. Specifically, it will address the following questions:
Which chemical or physical effects govern bioadhesion, i.e. the adhesion and proliferation of cells on surfaces?
How can these effects be influenced via the surface materials properties?
What are the state-of-the-art concepts to prevent unwanted bioadhesion (infection) on the one hand and to encourage/direct specific tissue growth on such surfaces on the other?
Which surface materials/coating materials are commonly used in medical devices and why?
Which common test methods are in use to monitor and judge the performance of such devices?
The Lecturers
Dr. Henk J. Busscher has been Full Professor in the Medical Application of Biomaterials and Head of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the University of Groningen since 1998. He is also the Director of the Institute for Biomedical engineering, Materials Science and Application (BMSA) at the same Faculty.
Dr. Theo G. van Kooten is currently heading the section Biomaterials and Biocompatibility of the Department of Biomedical Engineering within the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG). Besides research, Theo van Kooten is involved in several educational programs at bachelor and masters level concerning Biomedical Technology and Tissue Engineering.
Please note that the pre-conference tutorial and the main conference are two seperate events and that pre-registration is absolutely necessary as places are limited!
