| Flame Retardants Fundamentals |
Not yet familiar with the details and theoretical background of flame retardancy? Need a refresh? Our concise four-hour pre-conference tutorial aims to help you in this respect, facilitating and enhancing your understanding of the high-level technical presentations during the main conference. Specifically, the tutorial will address:
- Fundamentals of burning behaviour of different materials
- The different chemistries of flame retardant mechanisms
- Fire tests of different scales and for different applications
- Fire safety regulations and standards
- Flame retardants and environmental issues, chemical legislation (e.g. REACH)

The Lecturer
Dr. Adrian Beard works for Clariant Corporation, Hurth near Cologne in Germany, where he is in charge of industrial relations and regulatory affairs for phosphorus based flame retardants in the division Pigments and Additives. Since 2006 he also is president of the European Flame Retardants Association (EFRA), a sector group of the European Chemical Industry Council (CEFIC), Brussels, Belgium. In addition, he lectures part-time on fire safety at the University of Wuppertal, Germany.
From 1991 to 1999, before joining Clariant, he was head of the environmental analytical laboratory at the Fraunhofer-Institute for Environmental, Safety, and Energy Technology in Oberhausen, Germany. There he carried out fire safety research and took part in the investigation of the Dusseldorf Airport fire in 1996. He holds a doctorate in analytical chemistry from the University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada and a diploma in geo-ecology from the University of Bayreuth, Germany.
