Fire is one of the most underestimated of all risks. As insurance companies and fire engineers clearly state, fires are no longer a calculable risk. The loss to a production facility or business due to fire can be financially staggering and sometimes crippling. The total, direct and indirect cost of fires is estimated to be around 1% of GDP. Preventive fire protection is not only a hot topic; it is often a question of surviving. Fires kill some 100 000 persons per year worldwide. In order to reduce the toll of death and injuries as well as the huge cost to society fire standards are essential in all areas of modern live.

Because of the importance of prevention, fire retardation has become a very important industry. Fire-retardants are an effective means of controlling the performance of building materials during the initial stages of fire growth. In these context fire retardant coatings systems represent one of the most important technical solutions to protect construction and industrial products, and much research is currently being devoted to their further development.
