Like to know more about film formation in waterborne polymer systems?
Our concise pre-conference tutorial will try to make you an expert,
explaining to you in detail the progression of steps that occur during
this process and the chemical and physical parameters that govern
them. It thus aims to establish (or refresh) your deeper understanding
of the peculiarities of industrial waterborne (heterophase) coatings,
and to enable you to follow the high-level presentations of the main
conference more easily.
The exclusive four-hour tutorial is limited to a maximum of 20 participants
to guarantee an intense exchange of information. Specifically,
it will cover:
- a review of the basic physics at work in heterophase film formation
- an explanation of the mechanisms of film formation in waterborne coatings
and their parameters
- a discussion of how material (binder) properties translate into coatings
performance properties in this process
- the role and nature of additives in waterborne clearcoats
- a discussion of the current challenges and limitations for waterborne
clearcoat systems

The Lecturer
Dr. Joe Keddie is a Reader in the Department of Physics
at the University of Surrey, in Guildford, England. His
research concerns the physical properties of polymers
at interfaces and in colloids. After obtaining his PhD
in materials science at Cornell University in the USA in
1992, he worked as a researcher at the Cavendish Laboratory, University
of Cambridge, exploring the glass transition at polymer surfaces
and in thin films and studying latex film formation.
He moved to the University of Surrey in 1995. In 2001, the Institute of Physics awarded
him the Paterson Medal for his fundamental studies of polymers, and
he was elected a Fellow of the Institute. His paper on crosslinking in
alkyd emulsions won him the FSCT Roon Award. Dr. Keddie currently
leads two European projects (NsHAPe and NAPOLEON) on the development
of improved waterborne, polymer coatings and adhesives through
the control of their structure on the nanoscale. He is also a member of
the Organizing Committee of the Coatings Science International Conference
(CoSI).
