Group B: 14.00 - 18.30 h (fully booked) |
| Corrosion Fundamentals |
| Lecturer: |
Prof. Robert Akid, Sheffield Hallam University |
Not yet familiar with the details and theoretical background of corrosion processes and anticorrosive techniques? Need a refresh? Our concise four-hour pre-conference tutorial aims to help you in this respect, facilitating and enhancing your understanding of the high-level technical presentations during the main conference. Specifically, the tutorial will address
- electrochemistry applied to corrosion
- how corrosion problems occur
- different corrosion processes and forms
- testing methods
- key coating properties for anticorrosion performance
- future developments
The Lecturer
Having an original background in Metallurgy Prof. Robert Akid graduated with an honours degree in Chemistry from Brikbeck College, London and a PhD in environment-sensitive fracture at Sheffield University. Working as an assistant Director of Research at the University of Sheffield he began an intensive investigation on the role of environment and loading variables on the fatigue resistance of materials. Prof Akid was awarded a Senior Research Fellowship with the Royal Academy of Engineering working closely with CORUS (formerly British Steel) investigating the fatigue and corrosion fatigue performance of offshore structural steels.
More recent research has focused on barrier type coatings, paint and sol-gel for corrosion protection. This has led to the development of functionalised sol-gel coatings. He founded the Centre for Corrosion Technology, a centre working with local, regional and national industries investigating varied aspects of corrosion damage.
Prof. Akid is the Chairman of the Corrosion Committee, Institute of Materials, Mineral & Mining, a Council member of the Institute of Corrosion and a UK Delegate on the European Federation of Corrosion (EFC) Working Party on Corrosion Testing. In addition he is an Associate member of the EFC Working Party on Environment Sensitive Fracture and current Technical Editor of the Institute of Corrosion publication, 'Corrosion Management'.
