EUROPEAN COATINGS CONFERENCES
Programme 2010
MARINE COATINGS II · 09/10 Februar 2010

In the marine environment all surfaces are affected by the
attachment of fouling organisms. In addition sea water is an
aggressive agent and good electrolyte that provokes corrosion.
Regarding marine vessels, corrosion and surface fouling are major
factors affecting ship operating costs and vessel life. Enhanced
protection against fouling and corrosion generates significant
saving in both the maintenance and operation of marine vessels,
marine structures, maritime platforms and equipment. Focusing
on the latest developments in antifouling and anticorrosion coating
this conference provides you with up-to-date information, such as
environmentally sound antifouling coatings, nanotechnology and
novel resin technologies.
New in the field of marine coatings? Need a refresh? “Basics
on marine coatings” will give you details on the principle of
formulating marine coatings, such as the choice of raw materials,
determining coatings properties and generating high-performance
environmentally friendly coatings. Also the fundamentals of
biofouling and other sea-regarding challenges will be an issue.
Lecturer: Dr. Erik Risberg, Jotun Coatings, Norway

FURNITURE COATINGS · 02/03 March 2010

Contrary to many other industry segments, the furniture coatings
market is still dominated by solventbased materials. But here
also the success of waterborne products seems unstoppable. The
challenge as regards furniture coatings is to offer high gloss and
waterbased solutions at the same time – combining aesthetics
with environmental requirements. Mechanical and chemical
resistance are further characteristics. This conference will provide
an update on current trends for furniture coatings.
“Fundamentals of furniture coatings” will make you familiar with
the details and theoretical background of coatings for furniture
with a focus on wood furniture. Requirements on raw materials
and technologies will be discussed. Current applications will
be presented. A further focal point will be the replacement
of solventborne coatings with more environmentally friendly
alternatives.
Lecturer: Dr. Rolf Gertzmann, Bayer MaterialScience, Germany

FIRE RETARDANT COATINGS IV · 03/04 June 2010

The development of coatings to protect both the structure and the
surfaces of buildings against the spread of fire within a building
is important for all of us. Intumescent fire protection technology
continues to develop at a pace, where new products offering
greater performance with lower thicknesses emerge frequently into
the market. Focusing on current developments in raw materials as
well as mechanism and standards the conference will provide you
with ideal networking opportunities and up-to-date information.
Not yet familiar with the details and theoretical background of
flame retardancy? Need a refresh? Our concise four-hour preconference
tutorial “Flame retardant fundamentals” aims to help
you in this respect, facilitating and enhancing your understanding
of the high-level technical presentations during the main
conference. Specifically the tutorial will address fundamentals of
burning behaviour of different materials, the different chemistries
of flame retardant mechanisms as well as flame retardants and
environmental issues.
Lecturer: Dr. Adrian Beard and Volker Thewes, Clariant Produkte (Deutschland), Germany

PACKAGING COATINGS · 12/13 October 2010

Functional, barrier and non-barrier coatings cover a broad spectrum
of materials that are coated onto paper, metal and plastic to protect
the materials inside and/or to enable the substrate to act as a
suitable package for its content. Each application has its special
challenges. This conference will provide you with latest technical
developments in can coatings, flexible packaging, food contact
coatings as well as non-food coatings. Find out about novel raw
materials, new functionalities and enhanced performances.
Not familiar with packaging coatings yet? “Fundamentals on
packaging coatings” will familiarise you with the basics of can
coatings and packaging coatings. The tutorial aims to make you
an expert, and to enable you to follow the top-level presentations
during the main conference easily. The tutorial will explain to
you the basic conceptions and chemistries that are at work in
packaging coatings.
Lecturer: Brigitte Weber, Byk-Chemie, Germany
